How to write a screenplay? This is a familiar question I hear from guerilla filmmakers all the time. Writing film scripts or movie scripts or whatever you'd like to call it, is easy. All you need is to have lost yourself in the magic of the movies and want to become part of that glamorous and wealthy life. Or you want to know the creative satisfaction of writing that screenplay and seeing it portrayed up on the screen.
There are always people out there who say you'll fail, the script won't succeed and you won't be able to write a screenplay. Here are some of the things people have said to me when I was starting out writing scripts.
1) Everyone is writing a script.
2) You can't be taught to write a movie script.
3) Agents are only interested in established script writers.
4) You have to live in Hollywood to write a movie script.
5) It's not what you know it's who you know.
6) They'll steal your script and take your beautifully written movie and ruin it.
7) Nobody really knows what movie script will sell. All they want is the next American Pie or Die Hard and besides all they'll look at is established writers.
8) I couldn't write a script so you won't be able to either.
9) There are no original film ideas, every film has already been made.
10) You weren't born a talented screenwriter.
Non of this is true!
Here are some fundamental principles that are true:-
1) Anyone can become a screenwriter
2) A guerilla filmmaker has to write their own scripts
3) Be focused on the film idea and story - money, fame will all come later, a lot later!
4) Film ideas come from everywhere all the time always be open to new ideas you never know what will spark that award winning movie.
5) The foundation of any movie regardless of budget rests on a well rounded script.
6) Give the movie executives and buyers what they want. Reinventing the movie script is not the aim of the exercise.
7) Commerciality and artistry can go hand in hand and usually do in a successful script.
8) The how to write a screenplay process is broken down into clear steps for you to follow in order to sell your movie script whether it's to a financier, actors, production crew, film festivals or the audience.
9) The script is the most important aspect of any film whether you're making a feature film, a short film, a pop video, a commercial or a corporate video production and yes even documentaries can have a film script.
10) And finally as a guerilla filmmaker you can make millions of $$$$£££££€€€€€ with the right script.
Guerilla Filmmakers all over the world struggle with their films for one main reason. They don't like writing screenplays but learning how to write a script is fundamental.
In the beginning I found writing film scripts boring, difficult and lonely. I couldn't imagine anyone getting any enjoyment out of writing a movie script. How wrong I was. I now love writing. It's the one time I can put down the film I want to make without any distractions. The filmmakers that are, and have been, successful love to write film scripts and have learnt through trial and error how to write.
