BAFTA Awards

Welcome to the BAFTA Awards. This is where we hopefully bring you one step closer to being a member of the British Academy by reviewing some of the films that have been and are being considered for a Bafta Award. Thanks to the films distributors we get sent all the films that are up for consideration in all categories, lucky us! The British Academy of Film and Television Arts has a membership who are eligible to vote on the films that they like in three rounds of voting until a collective opinion in formed and there are clear winners for all categories. Sometimes a clear winner cannot be found, so then the Academy call upon various chapters to give the deciding vote. For example I'm part of the director's chapter. So one year a clear winner couldn't be found so I was asked, along with the other members of the chapter, to cast the deciding vote for best director. You get the idea. The idea of voting is simple, if you liked a film the chances are that you liked everything about the film, so in which case you vote for every member of the production who's up for an award.
The distributors spend millions putting on private screenings at cinemas across town with Q&A's with the film's stars who are often flown into London especially. We also get invited to film premiers and get to walk down the red carpet. When you watch a movie premier on TV and there are all those people on the red carpet who you don't recognize, it's probably us! Distributors also send out DVD screeners, usually before the film has even been released, so that we can watch the movies at home before we cast our vote. So as we watch all these great films, some of which you'll probably never hear about, we'll review them giving them all a chance to be seen by you. Of course this isn't going to be a review like you'd get in a film magazine - idolizing the actors and directors. We're going to review the films up for a BAFTA Award from a filmmaking point of view; looking in depth at the producing, directing, editing, sound, music, production design and acting to get under the skin of the film. We will be 100% honest about the film in some cases before the hype begins! However, if you disagree with a review just remember, it's only our opinion and you should write an opposing review and we'll publish it on the site.
After all we all love film and talking about movies is all part of that experience. I hope you like reading the reviews of the films hoping to be successful at the BAFTA Awards and then seeing the movies if you haven't already.
